How to design and sketch a handbag in Illustrator

Whenever I teach an Illustrator for fashion design class that covers how to create brushes for trims and other repetitive details such as laces, stitches, ribbons, rhinestones and chains I  try and remember to tell my class about a website that is called thehandbagresources.com. This site provides inspiration for many detail brushes and provides you with the a free sample download of their vector files. Their business is to sell flat sketches, textiles and detail brushes of handbags that are current. You can then put together different combinations a lot faster than having to sketch everything from scratch. Here is a really old example of me playing around with these. As I am writing this entry I actually checked the properties on the files and they say “10/26/05″.  Wow! If any of you decide to “doodle” around with their samples feel free to post a pic on FashionChalkboard.com’s Facebook page. How to create a feather stitch – Feel free to ask! Ai download included

Here is a question that came my way yesterday, my dear friend is to remain anonymous but she granted me permission to post her images (after blurring some of the info on them) and questions here: “I would like to know how to create a stroke (not a brush, the brushes are not reliable as far as I know, to make nice, even shapes).I had to do a “feather stitch” and couldn’t find out how to make a feather stroke. So I typed a “V”, tipped it, and copied pasted it all along the curve, which I am sure, is not the right way to do it, lol, time consuming. Thanks  a lot!!!”
This is my answer to her problem:
“NAME(scream our loud)…what makes you think that brushes are not making nice even shapes? You have a patience of an angel… nice work on your copy and paste job. I attached a file with the ai brush and a file with step by step pictures on how I did it.”
Click here for the ai. (cs5) download of the feathered brush and you can view/ read the tutorial by clicking on the first picture and then looking at the description of each picture.

Fashion Flat with Animal print-Giraffe

What kind of Fashion Flat Sketch would you use this print in? Today I finally finished a download that I planned to do for a long time. This download will allow you to play around with an animal print. This one will be the first of a series of different animal patterns that I will design. This one is a giraffe print that I designed in Photoshop then expanded in Illustrator so-that the recolor artwork feature in CS4 can easily create new colorways.

Once you download it, try “recolor artwork” out.  Select a swatch, go to edit> edit color> recolor artwork and double click the color boxes to change them * If you want to change the size, rotation or just the position of the print (Illustrator calls it pattern) right click (or ctrl + click for MAC) on the artwork that uses the print swatch and select transform and then click on any of the choices given like “scale” (see image 1). * Once inside the next menu it is important that you only put a check mark next to pattern, none of  the other option and check by clicking the preview button on and off to see if that is what you want it to do to your print (see image 2).

You can click any of the images to see a close up of your options.

You can download your Illustrator file for CS4 on the explore page right here. Let me know what you have created with this print and have FUN!

Lingerie design with Illustrator

One of my students has asked me to please send her a picot brush, since she knows that I have been working in lingerie for many  years. I thought that would make for a short post and nice download on my explore page. Working in lingerie, I established a library of fashion brushes for many little details that I had to use over and over again. Picot edges, laces, zig zag stitches, coverstitches, bows, ribbons and many more. I personally really enjoy the creation process of these tiny details. Most of the time, if I do not have a trim in my library I quickly scan it, clean it up in Photoshop and then trace it (either per hand) or with the live trace function inside of Illustrator. Many students also ask me what was my favorite part about working in Lingerie Design, and I would have to say that it depends on the day. Sometimes I like having the chance to create a graphic from scratch, like the rose in the pic below, then on another day I am simply delighted that a print that I designed finally made it into a fit sample or even better makes it into a magazine and gets picked up by a store (like urban outfitters see pic below). The 2 Illustrator downloads that I am providing are 1.the picot and cover-stitch brush & 2. the rose with the heather grey background. The picot and cover-stitch are ready to be used as brushes and you can change the color by changing the stroke color. The rose artwork can be explored by clicking on the lines and checking the brush window. Drag the Art- brush out of the window and see how the brush was created. The heather-grey is an actual swatch that you can use on tee shirts, sweat pants and whatever else kind of flat sketches you might come up with. It is not a seamless swatch and I used it only on tiny flat pieces like lingerie. You can download them on the explore page, enjoy and feel free to email me what you have created with them.

Appliques cut with the cricut and designed with the pen tool

Being a night owl I often times find myself watching those long late night commercials. And I can’t believe that I found  2 of my favorite things to do right now on TV during those infomercials . One of them being Zumba® but that would make for a whole new blog. And the second one is the Cricut® In case you do not know what the Cricut® is: It’s a printer like machine (instead of ink it has a blade) that uses cartridges that hold fonts and images that can be cut out of paper for the scrap-booking community and amazingly it also cuts fabric. When I first saw it, I did a little research online and found a video on youtube showing a lady cutting a cute little cupcake out of fabric and sewing it onto a baby’s onesie. I liked the idea so much and got extremely excited about being able to do this myself. The only thing that was bothering me was the fact that the Cricut® prides itself in being a computer-less product, meaning no need to know any software and no connection to computer required. The Cricut® offers cartridges of which 1-2 are included with the machine and then you have to buy other ones separately. I however envisioned something entirely different. I wanted to draw my own designs inside of Illustrator and then make the Cricut® cut it out of fabric for me. So I did a little more research and found that Provocraft® (maker of Cricut®) came out with a product that is called Cricut DesignStudio ® software. That sounded really exciting until I found out that this product only allows you to use images from the cartridges. I guess it’s a step up for anyone not interested in using a real design software, as I assume that before this software one was only able to cut images from one cartridge at a time? Anyways, after I did some more research I found a website that sells a down-loadable software called “SurecutsalotTM“<<< love the name>>> and tested it out. Well… after deciding which Cricut® to buy (because they come in different sizes) and finding coupons and some Heat N Bond to stiffen the fabric. And  it works! Ha! Here is short tutorial on what I did (see pics above) First I found my inspiration, which happened to be a towel holder with these cute little elephants. Then I took a picture of them and traced them in Illustrator, then I saved them as a SVG. file. Then opened my elephants (one at a time) in surecutsalot.. hooked my computer per usb up to the cricut and pressed cut. Voila… i had my first computer generated appliques. Which will be used for a baby blanket for my friend daughter. There are some important hints and tips for prepping the fabrics and how to apply it to the actual cutting mat of the Cricut® and which blade setting and so on and since that is all information that I forget as soon as I do it, I am glad that there is a huge community of Cricut® users that share their tips online on the Cricut® message board. Here is the link to the youtube video that inspired me. Here is the link to the Cricut message board Here is the link to the “SurecutsalotTM” software And you can download my little elephants as Ai files right here. They are on separate Layers.

Fashion Design graphics and brushes

Share/Bookmark Photoshop Class for fashion design You can download 2 brush files here SO we did a little bit of splattering images or rather symbols that are right inside of Photoshop, we used the splatters that I created with watercolor and the stains from my book cabinet. We made a selection of the splatters and turned them into working paths, whch we then used to create selections to color or delete parts of the symbols. Illustrator Class for fashion design Here I gave these images to play with: And created fashion brushes and seamless prints with the help of new tools like live trace and blob brushes and eraser tool: Share/Bookmark
