Fashion Flat sketch combining Illustrator and Photoshop skills

Last week during a live Intermediate to advanced Photoshop webinar I taught how to combine scanned images of scanned paint splatters with a heart symbol. I defined a brush from the splattered heart.  I then created a path of a heart in  and a used the splattered heart brush along this new heart.  The result of this was a new Heart with big and small hearts rotated along the heart shape. This was then defined as a new brush that I used to draw a graphic with. Read more »

How to draw gathering and ruching in Illustrator for flat sketch

Since something is wrong with the orignal post I am re-posting this today.

A question came my way per email today: “…I would like to know how you would make ruching (gathering) on a full length dress (on the horizontal), I seem to be having some trouble..”

Below you will see my answer with pictures, but I also put a link to the Illustrator files at the bottom of this post:

” … I know that doing shirring and ruching seems hard in the beginning and it is also a personal choice on how you want it to look…

For A & B You see original drawing to be dragged into brush window and defined as a pattern brush.

For C I made some of the parts thicker by pulling the anchor points out, with the direct selection tool.

Here I made the components of A,B and C into pattern brushes by dragging the parts into the brushes window. I then drew a horizontal line with a black stroke and then clicked on the brush inside the brushes window to see the rushing applied.

Finally I use the brush on top and along the Fashion Flat sketch that needs it. The size of the brush can easily be changed by using a different stroke size from your stroke window. Here you see that on the right side the brush is showing outside of the Garment, so i simply covered it with a little drawn object with a white fill. See left side. The easiest way for me to explain it is to show you inside of an ai. file. Click Here

Please open it and you can click and drag pieces apart with your direct selection tool to see what I like to draw when creating shirring…”

How to create a feather stitch – Feel free to ask! Ai download included

Here is a question that came my way yesterday, my dear friend is to remain anonymous but she granted me permission to post her images (after blurring some of the info on them) and questions here: “I would like to know how to create a stroke (not a brush, the brushes are not reliable as far as I know, to make nice, even shapes).I had to do a “feather stitch” and couldn’t find out how to make a feather stroke. So I typed a “V”, tipped it, and copied pasted it all along the curve, which I am sure, is not the right way to do it, lol, time consuming. Thanks  a lot!!!”
This is my answer to her problem:
“NAME(scream our loud)…what makes you think that brushes are not making nice even shapes? You have a patience of an angel… nice work on your copy and paste job. I attached a file with the ai brush and a file with step by step pictures on how I did it.”
Click here for the ai. (cs5) download of the feathered brush and you can view/ read the tutorial by clicking on the first picture and then looking at the description of each picture.

Free Friday Mini Fashion Webinar – QR-code fancier than your competitor

QR-codes are everywhere and they have quickly become mainstream. QR which stands for quick response is one of the simplest ways to peak interest in products, promotions and perhaps your portfolio? Anyone can create such code for free and the basics are very simple. Let’s be creative and make it more colorful and fun. I put my QR code in a heart shape and changed it’s color in Illustrator. It took a bit of testing to eliminate some errors but now you can scan it with your smartphone and you will find yourself on my Facebook page. Enter QR code in Fashion into Google images and become inspired by what companies around the world are doing with this free yet fun and possibly exciting mobile technology.

When: Friday, April 8, 2011 12:30 PM – 1:30 PM PDT
Any smartphone can install a free app like barcode scanner for android or qr reader for i-phone. I have seen simple tee-shirts with a screen printed QR-code to knitted QR-codes on scarves. Check out the dress by designer Sam Trout that features a cyber treasure hunt by clicking here. Advertisers in Magazines for different target audiences like Vogue or Seventeen are using the codes to drive traffic to their promotions and contests. Other magazines let you discover more details of their stories such as behind the scenes video footage or more photos of products. Fashionablymarketing.me reported in 2010 about Calvin Klein using a giant QR code on a billboard on Sunset Blvd. that let customers view a short add on their phones.

Photoshop and Illustrator for Fashion

Every now and then I receive an email with CADs* from someone who used my video training. I always appreciate it especially when I have never had the chance to meet the individual in person. These sketches came with this nice little note: “Hi Ludmila, Attached are some CADs* I sketched utilizing Photoshop and Illustrator. I sketch my initial bodies in Illustrator and then I fill the print in Photoshop. The print was taken from a scarf I bought which had a nice border. I have been sketching pretty much daily lately and with your help and the help of good friends I have come a long way. I just wanted to say thanks! Later today I will email you another few CADs* which are coming out nicely and they have more depth than these. Talk to you soon, Kent Daniel ” Well, I asked Kent for permission to post his sketches and he said yes. So thank you Kent for letting me share them here:

cut-and-paste

What is the Cut & Paste event?

Give them Illustrator, Photoshop, other software, a brief to follow, music, an live audience, a time limit and you have a competition that will be educational and fun. Yesterday, I saw a tiny little add on facebook.com about the yearly Cut & Paste event in Los Angeles. Every year since 2005 I missed it for some reason or another, so this time I had to go! And I am glad that I went. Among a nice, like minded, geeky audience, good music and an open bar 3 hours of quick paced competitions were fun to watch. Additionally one of the sponsors “Converse” held a drawing contest of which I will post some images in another post. For those of you who do not know what this event is about here is a brief summary: The annual Cut & Paste live event, is a competition that challenges digital designers to create artwork within a limited time-frame sitting on stage in-front of a live audience. They are giving a brief… (see videos), then compete to create most creative artwork in 2D or 3D and win a prize at the end of the evening. The winner of the night will then participate in the final event that brings together competitors from around the world.
